Conclusion: The general quality of the studies, however, is poor with significant risk of bias in favor of the intervention. Other: PubMed and the Cochrane Library.
Citicoline side effects
Across 681 first-hand reports, people mentioned a side effect 33 times (about 5 per 100 reports). The most common: depression, headache, anxiety. User reports show what people notice — they can't tell you whether Citicoline is safe for you.

What got worse for some people
In their own words
“I started taking 250mg of CDP Choline with it as well. After a few days I remember it making me feel really down emotionally.”
“I believe this had led to excessive accumulation of acetylcholine (ACh) and subsequent symptoms (depression, low mood, anxiety, etc).”
“Word of warning: Cognizin's (citicoline) half life is very long. It did not do well with sleep for me.”
“I was referring to CDP choline but figured they might all have the same side effect in higher doses.”
“I notice CDP-choline helps verbal fluency and social function, but doses of 1-1.2g cause overwhelming stressful feelings.”
Is Citicoline safe? What the research covers
Conclusion: There was insufficient evidence on the efficacy of any intervention to treat or prevent fatigue after stroke. Trials to date have been small and heterogeneous, and some have had a high risk of bias. Some of the interventions described were feasible in people with stroke, but their efficacy should be investigated in RCTs with a more robust study design and adequate sample sizes.
Conclusion: In this systematic review we present information relating to the effectiveness and safety of the following interventions: acute reduction in blood pressure, aspirin, evacuation (early surgical evacuation, or conservative treatment), decompressive hemicraniectomy, neuroprotective agents (calcium channel blockers, citicoline, gamma-aminobutyric acid agonists, glycine antagonists, lubeluzole, magnesium, N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonists), specialised stroke care, systemic anticoagulation (heparinoids, specific thrombin inhibitors, low molecular weight heparin, oral anticoagulants, unfractionated h
