Cysteine, cystine or N-acetylcysteine supplementation in parenterally fed neonates

Conclusion: Available evidence from RCTs shows that routine short-term cysteine chloride supplementation of cysteine-free PN in preterm infants improves nitrogen balance. However, there is insufficient evidence to assess the risks of cysteine supplementation, especially regarding metabolic acidosis, which has been reported during the first two weeks of cysteine chloride administration. Available evidence from a large RCT trial does not support routine N-acetylcysteine supplementation of cysteine-containing PN in extremely low birth weight infants. A large RCT would be required to assess whether routine pro

Pre-medication to improve esophagogastroduodenoscopic visibility: a meta-analysis and systemic review

Conclusion: There is improved visibility with pre-medication using Simethicone before esophagogastroduodenoscopy. In the Simethicone based regimen, administration of Pronase or N-acetyl-Lcysteine may be of little use in improving visibility. Based on the literature review, Simethicone dissolved in the water with the acceptably lowest ratio of 0.7 can still offer the good visibility but 30 mL of water should be avoided.

Efficacy of management for obstruction caused by precipitated medication or lipids in central venous access devices: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Conclusion: According to this review, the most effective methodology was shown to be the intravenous perfusion of sodium hydroxide in several treatments when the obstruction is caused by lipid deposition. In contrast, mineral deposition and drug deposition are best treated with l-cysteine to recover the patency of central venous access devices.
