What the research says

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses from PubMed, with their published conclusions.

AStrong research base

3+ meta-analyses or systematic reviews and 10+ randomized controlled trials in humans. The grade measures how much human research exists — read the conclusions below for what it found.

Sci Total Environ · 2023 · Meta-analysis / systematic review
A systematic review and meta-analysis of the direct effects of nutrients on corals

Conclusion: In lieu of developing specific thresholds for the management of nutrients as a stressor on coral reefs, we highlight important inflection points in the magnitude and direction of the effects of inorganic nutrients and identify trends among coral responses. The responses of corals to nutrients are complex, warranting conservative guidelines for elevated nutrient concentrations on coral reefs.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A · 2016 · Meta-analysis / systematic review
Changing recruitment capacity in global fish stocks

Conclusion: We conclude that both environmental changes and chronic overfishing have already affected the productive capacity of many stocks at the recruitment stage of the life cycle. These results provide a baseline for ecosystem-based fisheries management and may help adjust expectations for future food production from the oceans.

Water Res · 2024 · Meta-analysis / systematic review
Meta-analysis for systematic review of global micro/nano-plastics contamination versus various freshwater microalgae: Toxicological effect patterns, taxon-specific response, and potential eco-risks

Conclusion: Particularly, Komvophoron, Microcystis, Nostoc, Scenedesmus, and Gomphonema were more tolerant and might dominate freshwater microalgal communities under MNPs contamination. These results are crucial for acquiring the fate of freshwater microalgae under various MNPs contamination, identifying dominant microalgae, and reasonably assessing and managing involved eco-risks.

Microalgal Phenolics: Systematic Review with a Focus on Methodological Assessment and Meta-Analysis

Conclusion: Simple phenolics found in waste streams, such as olive mill waste, have been shown to enhance the antioxidant activity and various bioactivities of microalgal extracts, while complex biotransformation products of phenolics have also been characterized. In conclusion, the de novo biosynthesis of phenolic compounds via eucaryotic microalgae requires further investigation with better designed experiments and suitable analytical methods, while the response of microalgae to phenolic compounds in their growth medium is of great practical interest, both in terms of waste treatment and for the product
